About the Community Innovation Fund Pilot
The Community Innovation Fund Pilot is currently a research & development project sitting within BBRC. Part of our remit is to increase access to social investment by improving investment conditions for businesses and projects with a social purpose.
From our experience of working with enterprises from the more deprived communities of Bristol, we have seen that some of the grassroots projects which bring about the most change for the community, and the entrepreneur themselves, are riskier investments which struggle to access affordable business finance. The Community Innovation Fund aims to provide an alternative source of affordable finance that is able to invest in these enterprises by de-risking the investment in two ways:
We lend money that has been raised as a blend of grant and loan (grant-only during the pilot phase) in order to give the finance a higher risk tolerance, as we expect and can cater for high loss ratios. We tailor the terms and payback of each loan based upon what is appropriate for the size and state of the business, which can change as their business changes.
Each entrepreneur in receipt of funds will be required to take up a ‘backer’ from the local business sector, and from their community.
We aim to minimise exclusive ‘criteria’ and application processes by asking entrepreneurs to collaborate with their business and community backers and work through a series of questions about their business and the loan, rather than have all the answers up front.
We’ve designed these questions to take entrepreneurs along a journey of increasingly sophisticated business planning, de-risking them as investees through time.
About the role
Reporting to the Community Innovation Fund Steering Group, we’re looking for a Project Co-ordinator who is happy taking ownership of some diverse, critical pieces of work to get the pilot up and running. These include:
- Project managing and helping deliver on our 12-month pilot of the fund and related business support structures.
- Work with the Steering Group to guide and shape strategic changes and improvements to the pilot as it develops over time.
- Administering and co-ordinating communication between all new pilot entrepreneurs, their coaches, and the Steering Group.
- Networking and building relationships with Community Groups and Corporates to solicit referrals and business support.
- Acting as a point of contact and proactive guidance and follow-up for entrepreneurs taking part in the pilot.
- Administering and co-ordinating communication between all external stakeholders and delivery partners, including building effective signposting relationships.
- Creating and helping to draft all internal documentation of the fund.
- Responsibility for all I.T including delivery of the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, ongoing maintenance of the Pilot’s web presence, and maintenance of any social media accounts.
- Social Impact Measurement: Take responsibility for developing a methodology for monitoring routine impact measurement for both the Community Innovation Fund and the entrepreneurs that it supports. Produce reports as needed to support funding conversations.
- Supporting the team with the public dissemination of the findings of project evaluations, including regular reports for funders and trustees.
- Bid writing for grant applications to expand the core capacity of the project.
- Running PR and Communications including the development of a quarterly newsletter for stakeholders and planning and implementing a communications strategy leading up to the launch of the Fund in full.
- Liaising with BBRC’s accountants to provide monthly and quarterly financial updates.
- Project managing participation in events and project managing launch events
- Undertaking specific research projects as appropriate.
- Assisting and guiding interns wherever relevant.
- Servicing monthly Steering Group meetings: Minute taking, meeting arrangement and planning
- Helping with investment readiness of projects with guidance.
- Commitment to achieving social impact and equality in communities.
- Academic: Undergraduate degree (or equivalent professional qualification) with GCSEs A*- C in Maths and English.
- Communication: The ability to network with key influencers in the West of England region and the local and national Social Enterprise sector, and with people in the local community.
- Project management: able to manage multiple moving parts and busy stakeholders to achieve results.
- Creative: Willing to take the initiative, make decisions and be proactive within fast moving and innovative environment.
- A proactive self-starter who is able to manage relationships effectively
- Ability to travel regularly around the West of England and occasionally to London.
- Highly IT literate.
- Excellent written and presentation skills.
- Excellent project management skills.
- Previous experience within the social enterprise or business support sector.
- Previous demonstrable commitment to the third sector via volunteering or other contribution.
- Previous experience of business planning
- For the successful candidate we offer a competitive salary for the sector (up to £20k pro rata)
